Sunspots | cooler portions of the sun, look like black spots. |
Prominences | Superheated jets of gas and plasma will sometimes shoot out into space. |
Core | the center of the Sun. Also causes nuclear fusion. |
Radiative layer | Part of the sun where energy is transferred through radiation. |
Convective layer | Part of the sun where energy is transferred through the transfer of hotter plasma rising and cooler plasma falling. |
Photosphere | The surface of the sun is 5,000 to 8,000 degrees kelvin and is the portion of the Sun that emits light. |
Chromosphere | Thin layer of gases above the photosphere. This is the Sun’s atmosphere. The chromosphere adds a red tint to the Sun (only visible during solar eclipses). |
Corona | The outermost portion of the Sun, the part visible during eclipses. This is the Sun’s outer atmosphere |
Convection: | Transfer of heat through movement of fluids. (liquid, gas or plasma) Hot goes up, cold goes down |
Nuclear Fusion | Hydrogen atoms are smashed together to form Helium atoms. |
Radiation | The transfer of energy through electromagnetic waves. |
