Term | Definition |
noun | name of a person, place, thing or idea (ex. Daniel, London, table, dog, teacher, pen) |
pronoun | used in place of a noun or noun phrase to avoid repetition (ex. I, you, we, they he, she, it, me) |
adjective | describes, modifies or gives more information about a noun or pronoun (ex. big, happy, green, young, fun, crazy, three) |
verb | shows an action or state of being; shows someone or something is doing (ex. go, speak, run, eat, play, live, walk) |
adverb | describes/modifies a verb, an adjective or another adverb; tells how, where, when, how often or to what extent HINT: many adverbs end in -LY (ex. slowly, quietly, happily) Other frequent adverbs: always, often, sometimes, never |
preposition | shows the relationship of a noun or pronoun to another word; can indicate time, place, or relationship (ex. at, on, in, from, with, near, between) |
conjuction | joins two words, ideas, phrases or clauses together in a sentence and shows how they are connected (ex. and, or, but, because, so, yet, unless, since, if) |
interjection | a word or phrase that expresses a strong feeling or emotion (ex. Ouch!, Wow!, Great!) |
