| body mechanics | using the muscles of the body correctly when lifting or moving an object |
| body alignment | best placement of the body parts so the bones are efficiently used |
| HOB | head of bed |
| trapeze | equipment which allows a res. with paraplegia to move themselves in bed |
| Fowlers position | sitting in bed, head of bed 45-60 degrees |
| semi-fowlers position | sitting in bed, head of bed 35-45 degrees |
| lateral position | lying on the side |
| prone position | lying on the stomach head turned to the side |
| Sim's position | lying on left side/abdomen, used for rectal procedures |
| hemiplegia | paralysis to one side of body (right or left) |
| paraplegia | paralysis to both legs |
| quadraplegia | paralysis to arms and legs |
| prosthesis | artificial body part |
| ROM | range of motion |
| passive ROM | nurse assistant moves res. arms/legs through their full range of motion |
| assistive device | equipment which allows resident to be mobile |
| adaptive equipment | equipment which allows a resident to be independent with their ADL's |
| Physical Therapist | provides strengthening exercises and gait training, prescribes assistive devices |
| Occupational Therapist | instructs on self-care skills: prescribes adaptive equipment |
| Speech Therapist | performs swallow evaluations: instructs on speech and safe swalllow techniques |
| restorative care | examples:turning and positioning, skin care |
| supportive device | provides comfort, helps prevent pressure ulcers, keeps body in alignment |
| immobility | not able to move |
| contracture | permanent deformity of a joint |
| pressure ulcer | wound caused by prolonged pressure to an area on the body |
| decubitus | pressure ulcer |
| trochanter roll | supportive device which prevents legs from rotating outwards |
