Antibiotic | A drug the kills certain microbes that cause infection |
Asepsis | Clean, free of disease producing microbes |
Pathogen | A microbe that is harmful and can cause an infection |
Medical Asepsis | Practices that are utilized to prevent the spread of infection |
NonPathogen | A microbe that does not cause an infection |
Biohazardous Waste | Items contaminated with blood, body fluids, secretions |
Carrier | A human or animal that is a reservoir for microbes but does not develop the infection |
Autoclave | a machine that is used to destroy pathogens |
Disinfection | the process of killing pathogens |
Sterile | free of all microbes |
Immunity | protection against a disease or condition |
Communicable Disease | a disease that spreads easily |
Clean | free of pathogens |
Microorganism | small living thing only seen with a microscope |
Febrile | With a fever |
Infection | A disease state resulting from the invasion and growth of microbes in the body |
Local Infection | A infection in a body part |
Systemic Infection | An infection that has spread through the body |
Contamination | The process of becoming unclean |

Reservoir | The environment in which a microbe lives and grows - the host |
Spore | A bacterium produced by a hard shell |
Surgical Asepsis | The practices used to remove all microbes - sterile technique |
Vector | A carrier (animal or insect) that transmits disease |
Bacteria | One celled organisms that multiply rapidly. May be a pathogen or nonpathogen |
Viruses | An organism that grows in living cells. These are generally disease producing |
MDRO | Multi-Drug Resistant Organisms |
MRSA | Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus |
Portal of Exit | The way that the pathogen leaves the body |
Method of Transmission | How the pathogen is transmitted from one host to another |
Portal of Entry | The way that the pathogen enters the susceptible host |

Clean Technique | The same as Medical Asepsis |
