Word | Definition |
Solution | A well-mixed mixture that contains a solvent and at least one solute. |
Solvent | The part of a solution present in the largest amount. |
Solute | The substance that is present in a solution in a smaller amount and is dissolved by the solvent. |
Colloid | A mixture of small particles that don't dissolve. |
Suspension | A mixture of particles that can be seen and separated or filtered. |
Dilute Solution | A mixture that has only a little solute dissolved in a certain amount of solvent. |
Concentrated Solution | A mixture that has a lot of solute dissolved in a certain amount of solvent. |
Solubility | A measure of how much solute can dissolve in a solvent at a given temperature. |
Saturated Solution | When to much solute is added that no more can dissolve. |
Unsaturated Solution | A mixture that contains less dissolved solute than is possible at a given temperature. |
Supersaturated Solution | A mixture that has more dissolved solute then is predicted by its solubility at the given temperature. |
Acid | A substance that tastes sour, reacts with metals and carbonates, and turns blue litmus paper red. |
Corrosive | Meaning to break down other materials. |
Indicator | A compound that changes color when in contact with an acid or a base. |
Base | A substance that tastes bitter, feels slippery, and turns red litmus paper blue. |
Hydrogen Ion (H+) | An atom of hydrogen that has lost its electron. |
Hydroxide Ion (OH-) | A negative ion, made of hydrogen and oxygen. |
PH Scale | A range of values from 0 to 14. |
Neutralization | A reaction between an acid and a base. |
Salt | Any ionic compound that can be made from the neutralization of an acid with a base. |
Digestion | The process of breaking down complex molecules of foods into smaller molecules. |
Mechanical Digestion | A physical process in which large pieces of food are torn and ground into smaller pieces. |
Chemical Digestion | The process of breaking down large molecules into smaller ones. |
