Question | Answer |
What do bacteriostatic antibiotics do? | Do not kill, only inhibit growth |
What do bactericidal antibiotics do? | Kill the bacteria |
What are broad spectrum antibiotics? | Low specificity and affect a large range of bacteria |
What are narrow spectrum antibiotics? | High specificity, only affect a small range of bacteria |
What do penicillin and cephalosporins contain? | Beta lactam ring |
What do penicillins and cephalosporins do? | Inhibit an enzyme responsible for cell wall synthesis |
What aminoglycisides do? | Prevents methionine from binding to tRNA |
What do tetracyclines do? | Prevents tRNA from binding to an amino acid |
What does chloramphenicol do? | Prevents peptide bond formation in protein synthesis |
What does rifamycin do? | Inhibits RNA polymerase |
What do sulphonamides and trimethoprim? | Inhibits the enzyme which is the precursor for folic acid |
what do quinolones do? | Inhibit DNA girase, DNA does not coil |
What anibiotics affect cell wall synthesis? | Penicillin and cephalosporins |
What antibiotics affect nucleic acid synthesis? | Rifamycin, sulphonamides and trimethoprim, and quinolone |
