ecology | the study of interactions between organisms and the living and nonliving components of their environment |
interdependence | organisms interacting with other organisms in their surroundings and with the nonliving portion of their environment (their survival depends on these interactions) |
ecological model | used to represent or describe the components of an ecological system |
biosphere | the broadest and most inclusive level of organization ; the thin volume of Earth and it's atmosphere the supports life |
ecosystem | the biosphere is composed of these smaller units ; includes all the organisms and the nonliving environment found in a particular place |
community | includes only species of organisms ; all the interacting organisms living in an area |
population | focuses on the members or a single species ; all the members of a species that live in one place at one time |
