Axial Loading | Vertical compression of the spine that results when direct forces are transmitted along the length of the spinal column |
Hyperextension | Rapid acceleration or decceleration may result in fractur, ligament injury, muscle injury. (Caused by the neck moving backwards) |
Distraction | A spinal injury that occurs if the cervical spine is suddenly stopped while the weight and momentum of the body pull away from it. |
Hyperrotation | Caused by acceleration or deccelaration causing the neck to move to either side. May result in fracture, ligament injury, muscle injury. |
Subluxation | A partial dislocation. |
Hyperflexion | Caused by acceleration or decceleration when tthe neck is crunched forward. May cause fracture, ligament or muscle injury. |
Herniation | A protrusion of a body organ or portion of an organ through an abnormal opening in a membrane, muscle, or other tissue. |
Central Cord Syndrome | The syndrome is characterized by greater motor impairment of the upper than lower extremities. |
Anterior Cord Syndrome | The syndrome is caused by pressure on the anterior aspect of the spinal cord by a ruptured invertebral disk or fragments of the veterbral body forced posteriorly into the spinal into the spinal canal. |
Brown Sequard Syndrome | The syndrome is a hemi transection of the spinal cord. This syndrome may result from a ruptured intervertebral disk or the pushing of a fragment of vetebral body on the spinal cord. |
