Term | Definition |
Haploid | having a single set of chromosomes. Sex cells are haploid. |
Fertilization | the union of gametes (sperm and egg) to form a single cell called a zygote. |
Diploid | having 2 sets of chromosomes or paired chromosomes. Body cells are diploid. |
Zygote | first cell formed after fertilization. |
Sex linked traits | traits located on the X or y chromosomes, such as male pattern baldness |
Meiosis | type of cell division where the chromosome number is reduced by half to form sex cells. |
Purebred | refers to a homozygous dominant or homozygous recessive organism. |
Hybrid | refers to a heterozygous organism. |
Gametes | male or female reproductive cell. (sperm or egg) |
