| Haploid | having a single set of chromosomes. Sex cells are haploid. |
| Fertilization | the union of gametes (sperm and egg) to form a single cell called a zygote. |
| Diploid | having 2 sets of chromosomes or paired chromosomes. Body cells are diploid. |
| Zygote | first cell formed after fertilization. |
| Sex linked traits | traits located on the X or y chromosomes, such as male pattern baldness |
| Meiosis | type of cell division where the chromosome number is reduced by half to form sex cells. |
| Purebred | refers to a homozygous dominant or homozygous recessive organism. |
| Hybrid | refers to a heterozygous organism. |
| Gametes | male or female reproductive cell. (sperm or egg) |
