| Term | Definition |
| Amniotic Fluid | Fluid that surrounds the baby in the uterus. |
| Blastocyst | Hollow ball of cells that forms as the zygote divides. |
| Embryo | Developing baby from two weeks after conception through the eighth week of pregnancy. |
| Fetus | Developing baby from the ninth week of pregnancy until birth. |
| Miscarriage | The death of a baby before the 20th week of pregnancy, sometimes called spontaneous abortions. |
| Placenta | A special organ that allows nutrients, oxygen, and water to pass from mother to baby. It also allows the baby's waste products to pass to the mother for elimination. |
| Stillbirth | The death of a baby after the 20th week but before delivery. |
| Umbilical Cord | Flexible cord that contains blood vessels and connects the baby to the placenta. |
| Amniocentesis | Prenatal test, usually given between weeks 14 and 16, in which a sample of amniotic fluid is drawn and tested for congenital disorders. |
| Anemia | Iron deficiency in the blood. |
| Certified-nurse midwife | Nurse practitioner who has extensive training and experience in providing prenatal care and delivering babies. |
| Chorionic villi sampling | Prenatal test, usually given in the 10th week, that involves removing a sample of the amnio-chorionic membrane to check for congenital disorders. |
| Fetal alcohol syndrome | A condition that includes physical and mental disabilities common among the babies of mothers who drink alcohol heavily during pregnancy. |
| Obstetrician | Doctor who specializes in providing medical care for pregnant women and delivering babies. |
| Ultrasound | Prenatal test that uses sound waves to create a "map" of the fetus, showing fetal position and development. |
| Sudden infant death syndrome | A syndrome in which a seemingly healthy infant dies without warning. |
| Afterbirth stage | Third and final stage of labor. |
| Apgar test | A test that is used at birth (and then again five minutes later) to evaluate a baby's overall physical condition. |
| Breech | When the baby's buttocks or feet settle into the mother's pelvic area for birth. |
| Cesarean delivery | Major surgery in which a baby is delivered through incisions in the mother's abdomen and uterus. |
| Circumcision | Surgical removal of the male's foreskin, a skin flap that covers the head of the penis |
| Contractions | Pains felt during labor when the muscles of the uterus tense to open the cervix. |
| Delivery stage | Second stage of labor. |
