Term | Function |
Nucleus | Control centre. Contains chromosomes made up of DNA. |
Nucleolus | Manufacture subunits that combine to form ribosomes |
Ribosomes | Manufacture proteins. (Factories) |
Cell Membrane or Plasma Membrane | Regulates movement of materials in and out of cells. Encloses cell content. Helps maintain cell shape. Communicates between cells. |
Rough Endoplasmic Reticulum | Manufactures, processes & transports proteins. |
Smooth Endoplasmic Reticulum | Production of fats & steroids. Detoxification of drugs & poisons. |
Golgi Apparatus | Final synthesis & packaging of proteins into vesicles. Vesicles fuse with cell wall & release contents to outside of cell by EXOCYTOSIS. |
Mitochondria | Release energy (powerhouse) |
Lysosome | Breakdown debris. (garbage disposal) Digest 'worn out' or damaged organelles |
Chloroplasts | Plant Cells only. Photosynthesis |
Vacuole | Large in Plant Cells. Support & storage. |
Cell Wall | NOT an organelle. Plant Cells only. Support, defines cell shape, prevents expansion. Allows water & substances to pass through freely. |
Centrioles | During Cell Division - spindle forms between Centrioles |
Vesicles | Membrane bound 'sacs' involved in transport. |
