Term | Definition |
Communicable disease | One that can be transmitted, directly or indirectly from one person to another. |
Pathogen | Organism that causes disease. |
Incubation period | The time between the invasion by the pathogen and the onset of clinical symptoms. |
Prodromal period | Initial symptoms indicating an approaching onset of disease. |
Fomite | Any inanimate material that absorbs and transmits infection. |
Vector | An insect or animal that carries and spreads disease. |
Pandemic | World wide high incidence of a communicable disease. |
Endemic | Continuous incidence of a communicable disease expected in a localized area. |
Epidemic | Sudden increase of a communicable disease in a localized area. |
Opportunistic infections | Infection caused by organisms normally found in the environment that the immune-suppressed individual cannot resist or fight. |
Natural Immunity | Resistance to disease that is inborn. |
Acquired immunity | Immunity gained as a result of having the disease or artificially acquired via vaccines or immune serums. |
Active immunity | When a person produces his or her own immunity. |
Passive immunity | Provides the antibody but does not stimulate the system to produce its own antibodies. |
Erythema | Diffused reddened area on the skin. |
Macule | Circular reddened area on the skin. |
Papule | Circular reddened area on the skin that is elevated. |
Pustule | Circular reddened area on the skin that is elevated and contains pus. |
Pathogonomic | Lesion or symptom that is characteristic of a specific illness. |
Family therapy | Includes all family members, therapy during the day and child returns at night. |
Intervention | Therapy, behavior modification or milieu therapy. May involve individual, family or group. |
Behavior modification | Focuses on modifying specific behaviors by means of stimulus and response conditioning. |
Milieu therapy | Refers to the physical and social environment provided by the child. |
Dysfunctional | Situations that disrupt family patterns. |
Psychosomatic | Dysfunctions of the body that seem to have an emotional or mental basis. |
