Question | Answer |
Cell Membrane | Thin, flexible layer that surrounds the cell and controls the movement of substances that go in and out of the cell |
Cell Wall | Surrounds, protects and supports the plant cell. This organelle is not flexible. |
Centrioles | Helps with the process of mitosis and help in the formation of spindle fibers. This organelle is found in pairs. |
Chloroplast | Converts sunlight into sugar that can be used as energy by the plant. This is where photosynthesis takes place. |
Cytoskeleton | Provides structural framework for supporting the shape of the cell,. This organelle is located throughout the cytoplasm of a cell. |
Endoplasmic Reticulum | Site of protein and lipid synthesis |
Golgi Apparatus | Modifies and packages proteins so that they can be sent to different parts of the cell |
Lysosome | Using digestive enzymes, this organelle breaks down excess or worn out cellular substances |
Mitochondria | Performs cellular respiration - it takes in nutrients, breaks them down, and releases them as energy in the form of ATP |
Nucleus | "Brain" of the cell, site for genetic transcription, controls DNA replication for cell division |
Ribosome | tRNA is delivered to this organelle during protein synthesis |
Vacuole | stores materials so that they can be used later. |
Cilia | Small, hair like structures that extend from the surface of the cell and can help in movement and feeding. A cell can have hundreds or thousands of these hair like structures. |
Flagella | Single, large structure that helps move the cell faster, and can aid in feeding. |
Cytoplasm | Jelly-like substance that fills the inside of the cell and holds organelles in place |
