Term | Definition |
Biotic | Living parts of an environment. |
Abiotic | Nonliving parts of an environment. |
Producer/Autotroph | An organism, that makes its own food; almost always a plant. |
Consumer/Heterotroph | An organism that doesn't make it's own food and consumes other organisms; almost always an animal. |
Decomposer | An organism that breaks down other organisms and returns the nutrients; almost always a fungus or bacteria. |
Herbivore | An animal that only eats plants. |
Carnivore | An animal that only eats other animals |
Omnivore | An animal that eats both plants and animals. |
Scavanger | An animal that only eats animals that are already dead. |
Food Chain | The flow of organisms consuming and gaining energy from each other. |
Food Web | Multiple food chains put together. |
Sun's role in Food Chain/Web | The Sun is the source of energy that the producer uses to start the food web. |
Energy Pyramid | A food chain in the form of a pyramid that shows how energy decreases as it goes up said chain. |
Symbiosis | A close relationship between two organiams in witch one benefits. |
Mutualism | A form of symbiosis in witch both organisms benifit. |
Commensalism | A form of symbiosis in witch one organism benefits and one is not harmed, but doesn't benefit either. |
Parasitism | A form of symbiosis in witch one organism benefits and the other is harmed. |
Predator/Prey | A relationship in witch one animal eats another; not exactly symbiosis. |
Competition | When multiple plants or animals compete for resources. |
Adaptation | A change an organism makes to adapt to an environment, like hibernation or camouflage fur. |
