circulatory system | Also known as the cardiovascular system |
heart | muscular hollow organ called the "pump" of the body |
endocardium | inner layer of the heart |
myocardium | middle layer of the heart |
pericardium | outer layer of the heart |
septum | separates the heart into left and right sides |
atria | upper chambers of the heart |
ventricles | lower chambers of the heart |
tricuspid valve | one-way valve located between the right atrium and right ventricle. |
pulmonary valve | one-way valve located between the right ventricle and pulmonary artery. |
pulmonary valve | Takes deoxygenated blood to the lungs. |
bicuspid or mitral valve | one-way valve located between the left atrium and left ventricle |
aortic valve | one-way valve located between the left ventricle and aorta. |
aorta | largest artery in the body |
aortic valve | takes oxygenated blood to the body cells. |
pulmonary veins | bring oxygenated blood from the lungs. |
arteries | carry blood away from the heart |
veins | carry blood to the heart. |
capillaries | connect arteries and veins. |
diastole | brief period of rest in the cardiac cycle |
systole | period of ventricular contraction in the cardiac cycle |
closed fist | the size of the heart |
oxygen and nutrients | transported to the body cells |
carbon dioxide and metabolic materials | transported away from the body cells. |
