Subject | General idea, situation of a story A. central top a piece of literature |
Theme | Main idea in the story A. "message" B. "moral or lesson" to be learned by reader |
Protagonist | main character in a story A. not always a "good guy" B. central to the action of the story |
Antagonist | person causing conflict for the protagonist A. not always the "bad guy" B. could also be problem, thing causing conflict |
Staticcharacter | stays the same through out the story |
developing character | changes as story evolves |
plot | chain of events A. action of story plot always involves some sort of conflict |
climax | turning point of the story A.point of greatest intensity B.binds the rest of the story together C."unifies action" |
conflict | struggle between 2 opposing forces - basis for the plot A. Can be internal (Physiological) B.or external (physical) |
sequence | order in which a series of events occur A.also called chronological order B.order of time |
flashback | something that happened before the story A.interrupts the sequence B.takes you back in time |
foreshadowing | hints or clues to later events A. Ex. Music in a movie builds suspense |
tone | attitude a writer takes toward a subject A. Bitter, angry, comical |
diction | word choice A slang & informal expression used by author |
irony | A contrast between what is expected & what actually happens A. outcome is opposite of what you expect B. verbal irony - say one thing and mean another |
mood | different tone (reader) A. feeling or atmosphere writer creates for the reader |
fiction | writing about imaginary people, places, and events |
metaphor | a direct comparison A. Ex. My classroom is a zoo |
