| soil | the material that covers most of the Earth's land |
| particle | a very small piece of a material |
| humus | a material in soil that comes from the remains of dead plants and animals |
| nutrient | a material that living things must take in to live and grow |
| sand | soil made up of the largest rock particles |
| silt | soil with particles smaller than sand but larger than clay |
| clay | soil with the smallest particles |
| loam | soil that is a mixture of sand, silt, and clay |
