soil the material that covers most of the Earth's land
particle a very small piece of a material
humus a material in soil that comes from the remains of dead plants and animals
nutrient a material that living things must take in to live and grow
sand soil made up of the largest rock particles
silt soil with particles smaller than sand but larger than clay
clay soil with the smallest particles
loam soil that is a mixture of sand, silt, and clay
