Asteroids | Small rocky bodies in orbit around the sun. (Asteroid Belt between Mars & Jupiter |
Comet | Small body of ice, rock and cosmic dust loosely packed together. Tail points away from Sun. |
Oort Cloud | Where the comets are found, past Pluto. |
Meteoroid | Small rocky body orbiting the sun. Similar to an asteroid but smaller. |
Meteor | Bright streak of light caused by a meteoroid burning up in the Earth’s Atmosphere. (Shooting star) |
Meteorite | Meteoroid that enters the Earth’s atmosphere and strikes the ground. |
Axis | Planets rotate on this. |
Milky Way | The name of our spiral galaxy. |
Ellipse | Shape of the planets orbit. |
Rotate | Turn on axis. One day. |
Revolve | To orbit. One year. |
Terrestrial planet | Planets with solid hard surface. |
Gas planet | Planets made of gas. |
Sun | The only star in our solar system. |
Mercury | Planet with very high and low temperatures. Many craters. |
Venus | Hottest brightest planet. Day longer than year. |
Earth | Water planet. |
Mars | Red planet due to iron oxide in soil. |
Jupiter | Largest planet. Big Red Spot. |
Saturn | Planet with the most rings. |
Uranus | Axis tilted. Planet spins on its side. |
Neptune | Named after the God of the Sea. |
Pluto | Dwarf planet. Icy surface. |
