TermDefinition
Asteroids Small rocky bodies in orbit around the sun. (Asteroid Belt between Mars & Jupiter
Comet Small body of ice, rock and cosmic dust loosely packed together. Tail points away from Sun.
Oort Cloud Where the comets are found, past Pluto.
Meteoroid Small rocky body orbiting the sun. Similar to an asteroid but smaller.
Meteor Bright streak of light caused by a meteoroid burning up in the Earth’s Atmosphere. (Shooting star)
Meteorite Meteoroid that enters the Earth’s atmosphere and strikes the ground.
Axis Planets rotate on this.
Milky Way The name of our spiral galaxy.
Ellipse Shape of the planets orbit.
Rotate Turn on axis. One day.
Revolve To orbit. One year.
Terrestrial planet Planets with solid hard surface.
Gas planet Planets made of gas.
Sun The only star in our solar system.
Mercury Planet with very high and low temperatures. Many craters.
Venus Hottest brightest planet. Day longer than year.
Earth Water planet.
Mars Red planet due to iron oxide in soil.
Jupiter Largest planet. Big Red Spot.
Saturn Planet with the most rings.
Uranus Axis tilted. Planet spins on its side.
Neptune Named after the God of the Sea.
Pluto Dwarf planet. Icy surface.
