Term | Definition |
Heredity | The passing on of physical or mental characteristics genetically from one generation to another. |
Genetics | The study of heredity and the variation of inherited characteristics. |
Allele | One of two or more alternative forms of a gene that arise by mutation and are found at the same place on a chromosome. |
Gene | A linear sequence of nucleotides along a segment of DNA that provides the coded instructions for synthesis of RNA, which, when translated into protein, leads to the expression of hereditary character. |
Trait | A genetically determined characteristic or condition. |
Dominant | The dominant form of a gene that overpowers the counterpart, or recessive, form located on the other of a pair of chromosomes. |
Recessive | The form of a gene that is not expressed as a trait in an individual unless two such genes are inherited, one from each parent. |
Genotype | The genetic makeup of an organism or group of organisms with reference to a single trait, set of traits, or an entire complex of traits. |
Phenotype | The appearance of an organism resulting from the interaction of the genotype and the environment. |
Homozygous | Having identical pairs of genes for any given pair of hereditary characteristics. |
Heterozygous | Having dissimilar pairs of genes for any hereditary characteristic. |
Monohybrid Cross | A genetic cross made to examine the distribution of one specific set of alleles in the resulting offspring. |
