Term | Definition |
Collagen | The main structural protein of the various connective tissues in animals mostly found in fibrous tissues such as tendons, ligaments and skin. |
Ligaments | Hold two bones together and keep the joints from moving. |
Tendons | Fibrous bands of connective tissue that join the muscle to the bone. |
Synovial fluid | Lubricant between joints. |
Ball and Socket Joint | The end of one bone is shaped like a ball. It fits the end of another bone that is shaped like a cup or socket. E.g - Shoulder |
Hinge Joint | Another type of synovial joint. They occur where the extremities of two joining bones fit like a hinge. E.g - Elbow |
Sliding Joint | Only allow movement side to side or back to front The joints between the ribs and the vertebral joints are sliding joints. E.g - Back |
Pivot Joint | Only capable of rotation. For example The atlas and axis the first and second vertebrae in the spinal column. The first vertebrae ( atlas) rotates around a peg like projections of the second vertebrae. E.g - Wrists |
Double Hinge Joint | Is like a hinge joint that allows sideways movement eg spreading the fingers. E.g - Thumb |
Cartilage | Made up of tough flexible protein fibers which form a smooth, frictionless surface around a joint or the support for structures. |
