Bowel Elimination | the passage and dispelling of stool through the intestinal tract by means of intestinal smooth muscle contraction} |
Urinary Elimination | the passage of urine out of the urinary tract through the urinary sphincter and urethra |
Continence | the purposeful control of urinary or fecal elimination |
Retention | keeping within the body materials normally excreted |
Stress Incontinence | loss of small amounts of urine during coughing sneezing, jogging, etc.; patients cannot tighten the urethra enough to overcome the increased bladder pressure, may be due to weakened pelvic muscles; the most common type of incontinence |
Urge Incontinence | the perception of an urgent need to urinate as a result of bladder contractions, regardless of the volume of urine in the bladder; aka overactive bladder |
Functional Incontinence | occurs as a result of factors other than abnormal function of the bladder and urethra; could be due to loss of cognitive function (i.e, patients with dementia |
Impaction | stool that is wedged into the rectum with diarrhea fluid leaking around the impacted stool; use a gloved, lubricated finger for digital removal of stool |
Fecal Incontinence | inability to control defecation, often caused by diarrhea; assess for causes, such as medications, infections, or impaction; provide perineal care after each stool and apply a moisture barrier |
Transient Incontinence | temporary urinary incontinence |
