Differentiation | The process by which cells or tissues undergo a change towards a more specialised function. |
Embryonic stem cell | An undifferentiated cell taken from an embryo which is capable of differentiating into all types of cell. |
Substitution mutation (point mutation) | The replacement of one nucleotide by another on a DNA sequence. |
Translocation mutation (chromosome mutation) | The attachment of a length of DNA onto another chromosome. |
Insertion mutation (point mutation) | The addition of an extra nucleotide on a DNA sequence. |
Genomics | The science of interpreting genes; the study of an organism's genome using information systems, databases and computerised research tools. |
Duplication mutation (chromosome mutation) | The repetition of a section of DNA within a chromosome. |
Deletion mutation (point mutation) | The loss of a nucleotide from a DNA sequence. |

Inversion mutation (chromosome mutation) | The inversion (reversal) of a section of DNA within a chromosome. |
Blastocyst | An embryo that has developed for 5 to 6 days after fertilisation. |
