antihistamine | medication blocks effects of histamine released by body during allergic reactions |
ANA; antinuclear antibody titer | blood test that determines number of antibodies against cell nuclei present in bloodstream; present in autoimmune conditions |
autoimmune disease | results from body's immune system attacking its own cells; examples include systemic lupus erythematosus and sarcoidosis |
corticosteroids | used as medication to treat autoimmune diseases due to their very strong anti-inflammatory properties |
cytotoxic cells | cells capable of physically attacking and killing pathogens or diseased cells |
ELISA; enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay | blood test for antibody to AIDS |
hives | the appearance of wheels during allergic reaction |
immunodeficiency | also called immunocompromised |
immunosuppresant | medication to block certain actions of immune system |

sarcoidosis | fibrous lesions forming in lymph nodes, liver, skin, lungs, spleen, eyes, and small bones of hands and feet |
scratch test | allergy test where body is exposed to allergens through a light scratch in skin |
SCIDS; severe combined immunodeficiency syndrome | genetic condition of children born with nonfunctioning immune system |
SLE; systemic lupus erythematosus | autoimmune disease in which immune system attacks connective tissue throghout the body |
urticaria | severe itching associated with hives |
vaccination | immunization |
