| Term | Definition |
| Plasma (Cell) Membrane | separates the interior of the cell from the outside environment (cell’s outer boundary) and controls what goes in and out. |
| Nucleus | the control center of eukaryotic cells and contains the DNA which codes for proteins and other important molecules |
| Cytoplasm | a jelly-like substance within the cell membrane that contains the inner fluid, the cytoskeleton and the organelles |
| Mitochondria | the “Powerhouse” of the cell The function of the mitochondria is to transfer energy. This is the site of Cellular Respiration |
| Ribosomes | builds proteins, coded for by the DNA in the cell’s nucleus |
| Endoplasmic Reticulum | a system of membranous tubes and sacs that move molecules from one part of a cell to another “intracellular highway” |
| Rough Endoplasmic Reticulum | contains the ribosomes and therefore makes proteins |
| Smooth Endoplasmic Reticulum | has No ribosomes and builds lipids |
| Golgi Apparatus | another system of flattened, membranous sacs that take products from ER (proteins, lipids, etc..), process & package them and then ship them to the cell membrane "Post Office" |
| Vesicles | small, membrane-enclosed sacs that store and transport packages |
| Lysosomes | specialized vesicles containing enzymes which digest (breakdown) lipids, carbohydrates and proteins and even whole organelles. They remove all the “junk”! |
| Centrioles | found in animal cells only and help organize cell division (cell reproduction) |
| Cell Wall | a rigid layer made of cellulose found outside the cell membrane in plant cells The function of the cell wall is to provide support and protection |
| Chloroplasts | organelles in plant cells that use light energy from the sun to make carbohydrates from CO2 and water. This is where Photosynthesis takes place |
| Vacuole | a large, fluid-filled organelle found mainly in plant cells that stores water, enzymes, metabolic wastes, and other materials |
