Cell Organells

TermDefinition
Plasma (Cell) Membrane separates the interior of the cell from the outside environment (cell’s outer boundary) and controls what goes in and out.
Nucleus the control center of eukaryotic cells and contains the DNA which codes for proteins and other important molecules
Cytoplasm a jelly-like substance within the cell membrane that contains the inner fluid, the cytoskeleton and the organelles
Mitochondria the “Powerhouse” of the cell The function of the mitochondria is to transfer energy. This is the site of Cellular Respiration
Ribosomes builds proteins, coded for by the DNA in the cell’s nucleus
Endoplasmic Reticulum a system of membranous tubes and sacs that move molecules from one part of a cell to another “intracellular highway”
Rough Endoplasmic Reticulum contains the ribosomes and therefore makes proteins
Smooth Endoplasmic Reticulum has No ribosomes and builds lipids
Golgi Apparatus another system of flattened, membranous sacs that take products from ER (proteins, lipids, etc..), process & package them and then ship them to the cell membrane "Post Office"
Vesicles small, membrane-enclosed sacs that store and transport packages
Lysosomes specialized vesicles containing enzymes which digest (breakdown) lipids, carbohydrates and proteins and even whole organelles. They remove all the “junk”!
Centrioles found in animal cells only and help organize cell division (cell reproduction)
Cell Wall a rigid layer made of cellulose found outside the cell membrane in plant cells The function of the cell wall is to provide support and protection
Chloroplasts organelles in plant cells that use light energy from the sun to make carbohydrates from CO2 and water. This is where Photosynthesis takes place
Vacuole a large, fluid-filled organelle found mainly in plant cells that stores water, enzymes, metabolic wastes, and other materials

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.

To see how well you know the information, try the Quiz or Test activity.
