Physician's Orders/ Authority | Statements of what needs to be done for pt. May only be taken down by nurse. |
Behavioral Care | Interventions to be done for resident with behavioral issues. Must be followed closely. |
Log Rolling | Method of turning a pt so that spine is kept in straight alignment. |
Transfer/ Gait Belt | Webbed or woven belt with buckle that is used to assist weak or unsteady pt with standing, walking, and transfers. |
Ambulate | To walk. |
Assistive Devices | Items that make tasks easier for a person with a physical disability. |
Paraplegia | Paralysis from the waist down. |
Quadriplegia | Paralysis from the neck down. |
Hemiplegia | Paralysis on only one side of the body. |
Trochanter Roll | Devices placed by pt's legs tp keep hips from turning outward. |
Supportive Devices | Pillows or rolled blankets used to keep pt in a certain position. |
Weight-bearing | Ability of a pt to stand on one or both legs. |
Dangle | Sitting a pt on the edge of the bed for a certain amount of time to decrease potential for dizziness or falling. |
Shearing | Force created when pt is pulled across surface that offers resistance. *Causes skin breakdown* |
Syncope | Fainting. |
Draw Sheet | Extra sheet that allows pt to be re-positioned without shearing. |
Which side is used for a cane? | The strong side. |
Which side does STNA stand, when assisting a pt with a cane? | Cane on strong side; STNA on weak side. |
Which side does the STNA use while assisting the pt to walk without a cane? | STNA on the strong side. |
Which types of crutch walking are used for pt's with weight-bearing on one foot? | 3 point -swing to & swing through |

Supine Position | Pt is on back. Also called horizontal recumbent. |
Lateral/Side-laying Position | Pt is lying on one side. |
Prone Position | Pt is on stomach with head to one side. |
Low Fowler's Position | Head of bed is elevated 15 degrees. |
Mid Fowler's Position | Head of bed is elevated to 45 degrees. |
High Fowler's Position | Head of bed is elevated 60-90 degrees. |
Sims Position | Pt is on left side with left arm behind back & right arm by head. *Also called left lateral position* |
Lithotomy Position | Pt is in stir-ups. |
Dorsal Recumbent Position | Pt is on back with feet on bed, so knees are tented. |
Knee Chest Position | Pt's head/arms & knees are on bed, with bottom in the air. |
Standard of Care | The correct conduct & performance when completing pt care. |
Duty | Acting as another reasonable healthcare worker would act. |
Breach of Duty | Action in an unacceptable way. |
Direct or Proximate Cause | What happened directly or indirectly caused a problem/injury. |
Injury | Pt must be harmed in some way from the act noted in malpractice claim. |
Neglect/negligence | Doing or failing to do something for the pt that caused an injury. *Usually unintentional* |
Intentional Acts | Purposely intending to do a wrongful act. These may or may not be considered "abuse". |
Assualt | Putting another fear of being touched in an offensive way. |
Battery | Touching without consent. |
False Imprisonment | Detention of a person against their will. |
Invasion of Privacy | Revealing personal information about a person without their consent. |
Abuse | Causing physical or mental harm. |
Physical Abuse | Causes harm to the body. |
Psychological Abuse | Causes mental injury. |
Financial Abuse (Misappropriation or Larcency) | Taking personal items from the pt. (Stealing) |
Defamation of Character | Injury to a person's reputation or character. |
Slander | Oral defamation. |
Libel | Written defamation. |
Nominal Damages | A small amount awarded just to say the HC worker was wrong. |
Compensatory Damages | An amount that puts the injured person into the same state as before the injury. |
Punitive Damages | An amount meant to punish. |
Advanced Directive | A document that allows a person to chose their medical care even when they cannot physically do this!! |
Living Will | Describes what should or should not be done in case of an emergency. |
