Signal Anxiety | a learned response to an anticipated event |
anxiety state | occurs when one's coping abilities become overwhelmed and emotional control is lost |
anxiety trait | a learned component of the personality |
coping mechanism | behaviors to help decrease discomfort |
defense mechanisms | psychological strategies that help to lessen anxious feelings |
avoidance behaviors | refusing to cope with anxiety-producing situation by ignoring it |
anxiety disorder | exists when anxiety is expressed in ineffective or mal-adaptive ways and one's coping mechanisms do not successfully relieve the distress |
panic attack | a brief period of intense fear or discomfort |
agoraphobia | anxiety about possible situations in which panic attack may occur |
phobia | an internal fear reaction |
obsession | a distressing persistent thought |
compulsion | a distressing recurring behavior |
addictive behavior | obsessive-compulsive behavior thatt may form addiction such as gambling, working, shopping, excessive sexual activity |
traumatic stress reaction | a series of behavioral and emotional responses following an overwhelmingly stressful event |
flashbacks | symptoms of PTSD which are vivid recollections of the event where the individual relives the frightening experience |
anxiety | a feeling of uneasiness, uncertainty and helplessness |
emotional response | crying, communicating or sharing one's anxious feelings and using ego defense mechanisms |
spiritual coping methods | include prayer, faith and ritual |
intellectual coping mechanisms | aimed to making the threat less meaningful by changing one's perception |
physical coping mechanisms | include efforts to directly face and handle the problem |
separation anxiety disorder | diagnosed when children are unable to be without their parents for any length of time |
overanxious disorder | appears during childhood with unrealistic levels of anxiety lasting longer than 6 months (a long time in the life of a child) |
generalized anxiety disorder | diagnosed when an individual's anxiety is broad, long-lasting and excessive |
social phobia | an unrealistic and persistent fear of any situation in which other people could be judging |
obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD) | persons are consumed by self-destructive, anxiety reducing thoughts or actions |
displacement | placing focus of anxiety into compulsive actions |
cognitive-behavioral therapy | helps clients intellectually understand the ineffective behaviors used to cope with anxiety and replace them with more successful behaviors |
systematic desensitization | clients learn to cope with one anxiety-provoking stimulus at a time until the stressor is no longer associated with anxity |
flooding | rapid and repeated exposure to the feared object or situation until anxiety levels diminish |
