Global Warming | The rise in the average temperature of Earth's atmosphere and oceans since the late 19th century and its projected continuation. |
Greenhouse Gases | Gases in the atmosphere trap heat, making the Earth a place that is warm enough to live. |
Thermal Pollution | Warmed water is put into rivers, lakes, and streams and the temperature of these bodies of water increases. |
Eutrophication | The process that occurs when fertilizer and organic wastes (manure) are washed into waterways resulting in excessive plant and algae growth and decay and a reduction in the oxygen content in the water, suffocating and killing organisms in the water. |
Pollution | The introduction of contaminating substances or energy into the natural environment that change the environment for the worse. |
Hydraulic Fracturing (Fracking) | The process of drilling and injecting fluid into the ground at a high pressure in order to fracture shale rocks to release natural gas inside. |
