Non-Renewable Resources Natural resources that cannot be replaced by nature.
Renewable Resources Natural resources that can be replaced by nature.
Irrigation The process of supplying water to dry regions.
Erosion The carrying off of soil by water or wind.
Urban Development The building of cities, towns, and other urban areas.
Deforestation The demolition and removal of forests for the purpose of urban development.
Habitat Fragmentation Occurs when small portions of a habitat become isolated from one another.
Hydroelectric Power Electricity produced from the mechanical energy of falling or running water.
Surface Mining The process of removing mineral resources from the Earth.
Fossil Fuels Fuels formed by natural processes such as decomposition of buried dead organisms.
Hydrocarbons Compounds made of hydrogen and carbon that are harmful to plants and can break down the ozone layer.
Acid Rain Precipitation that is more acidic than normal (pH less than 7).
Global Warming The rise in the average temperature of Earth's atmosphere and oceans since the late 19th century and its projected continuation.
Greenhouse Gases Gases in the atmosphere trap heat, making the Earth a place that is warm enough to live.
Thermal Pollution Warmed water is put into rivers, lakes, and streams and the temperature of these bodies of water increases.
Eutrophication The process that occurs when fertilizer and organic wastes (manure) are washed into waterways resulting in excessive plant and algae growth and decay and a reduction in the oxygen content in the water, suffocating and killing organisms in the water.
Pollution The introduction of contaminating substances or energy into the natural environment that change the environment for the worse.
Hydraulic Fracturing (Fracking) The process of drilling and injecting fluid into the ground at a high pressure in order to fracture shale rocks to release natural gas inside.
