enriched blood | has oxygen |
depleted blood | has no oxygen but instead carbon dioxide |
left ventricle | pushes enriched blood out of the heart |
right ventricle | pushes depleted blood out of the heart |
venules | small vessels that turn into veins |
capillaries | small vessels that deliver oxygen and nutrients to the cells |
lung | exchanges oxygen for carbon dioxide |
aorta | the largest artery in the body, leads directly from the heart |
pacemaker | a group of cells that adjust the heart rate |
blood | the river of life, carries nutrients and oxygen to the cells |
blood pressure | pressure in the vessels caused by the force of the ventricles contracting |
coranary artery | a vessel that supplies the heart itself with blood since the heart cannot take nutrients and oxygen from the blood flowing through it |
systolic | the top number when reading blood pressure. This number is generated by the force of the ventricles contracting |
diastolic | the top number when reading blood pressure, is generated by the atria refilling |
septum | the tissue that divides the left and right side of the heart |
pulmonary artery | the artery that carries depleted blood to the lungs |
vena cava | 1 of 2 veins that carry blood to the heart |
adrenaline | a chemical that causes the heart rate to increase suddenly, often created by fearful situations |
respiration | the process in which oxygen and glucose react to give the cells energy |
