Term | Definition |
Acquit | When it is decided that an accused person is innocent-not guilty |
Admissible | This refers to anything a witness says that the jury should be allowed to hear and consider |
Bailiff | A court official who helps the judge carry out proper procedure |
Charge | What the accused person is said to have done. Also; to accuse someone of a crime. Also; when the judge tells the jury at the end of the trial what its duty is. |
COnvict | When it is decided that an accused person is guilty |
Cross-Examine | When a lawyer questions a witness who has already been questioned by the other side |
Defendant | the person being accused |
Defense | The Lawyers who try to prove the defendant is innocent. |
Hung Jury | A jury must be in complete agreement in order to convict or to acquit. When a jury is unable to agree on a verdict |
Incriminate | To make someone look guilty of something |
Jury | Group of voters (~12 people) who decide whether an accused person is guilty or innoccent |
Negligence | Carelessness; not taking action to prevent something dangerous from happening |
Negligent Manslaughter | The accidental killing of someone due to another person's negligence and carelessness |
Oath | The honesty statement required of a person giving a testimony |
Objection Overruled | What a judge says when they decide to allow a lawyer to ask a question or to let a witness say something that the other lawyer did not want the jury to hear |
Objection Sustained | What a judge says when they decide not to allow a lawyer to ask a question or not to let a witness say something that the other lawyer did not want the jury to hear |
Perjury | The crime of lying in court when one has sworn to tell the truth |
Prosecution | The lawyers who are trying to prove that the defendant is guilty of a charge |
Stenograph | The person who keeps a written or taped record of all the testimonies given in trial |
Taking the fifth | A witness refusing to answer a question on the grounds that he might incriminate himself, a right granted in the fifth amendment to the constitution |
Testify | To say under oath in court what one saw, heard, etc. |
Testimony | What a person said in a court under oath |
Verdict | A court'd decision about whether an accused person is guilty or innocent |
Witness | A person who is called upon in court to give a testimony |
