matter | anything that takes up space. |
Elements | All the other substances, can't be broken down |
metals | good conductors of heat, can bend without breaking, most have a gray color. |
nonmetals | don't conduct heat or electricity. |
semimetals | are both metal and nonmetals. |
compound | is a type of matter made of two or more elements |
molecule | smallest partial of a compound that still acts like that compound |
atoms | smallest part of an element that still acts like that element |
Atomic theory | states that everything is made of atoms |
protons | positive charge. found in the nucleus |
neutrons | no charge. found in the nucleus |
electrons | negative charge. orbits the nuceus |
solid | has a definite shape and volume |
liquid | definite volume no definite shape |
gas | has no defiant shape or volume |
plasma | like a gas, but conducts heat and electricity, occurs at high temps. |
melting point | when a solid turns in to a liquid or liquid to solid. freezing point is the same as the melting point |
evaporation | when liquid becomes a gas |
condensation | when a gas becomes a liquid. gas partials touch a cold surface and the temp. drops. |
