Term | Definition |
Matter | Anything that has mass and takes up space. |
Elements | Material made of the same basic kind of matter and the ingredients that make substances. |
Metals | They are good conductors of heat and electricity. |
Nonmetals | Elements that do not conduct heat or electricity very well. |
Semimetals | Elements that are sometimes like metals and sometimes like nonmetals. |
Atoms | The smallest part of an element that still has the properties of an element. |
Atomic theory | the idea that everything is made of small particles. |
compound | a type of matter made of two or more elements. |
molecule | the smallest particle of a compound that still has the properties of that compound. |
Solid | A substance that has a definite shape and volume. |
Liquid | A substance that has a definite volume, but no definite shape. |
Gas | A substance without a definite shape or volume. |
Plasmas | Atoms that break down into part with electric charges. |
Freezing Point | When a liquid turns into a solid. |
Melting Point | When a solid turns into a liquid. |
Evaporation | Happens when particles leave a liquid and become gas. |
Condensation | Occurs when a gas turns into a liquid. |
