Properties of Matter
| Term | Definition |

| Matter | Anything that has mass and takes up space. |
| Elements | Material made of the same basic kind of matter and the ingredients that make substances. |
| Metals | They are good conductors of heat and electricity. |
| Nonmetals | Elements that do not conduct heat or electricity very well. |
| Semimetals | Elements that are sometimes like metals and sometimes like nonmetals. |
| Atoms | The smallest part of an element that still has the properties of an element. |
| Atomic theory | the idea that everything is made of small particles. |
| compound | a type of matter made of two or more elements. |
| molecule | the smallest particle of a compound that still has the properties of that compound. |
| Solid | A substance that has a definite shape and volume. |
| Liquid | A substance that has a definite volume, but no definite shape. |
| Gas | A substance without a definite shape or volume. |
| Plasmas | Atoms that break down into part with electric charges. |
| Freezing Point | When a liquid turns into a solid. |
| Melting Point | When a solid turns into a liquid. |
| Evaporation | Happens when particles leave a liquid and become gas. |
| Condensation | Occurs when a gas turns into a liquid. |
