Term | Definition |
Enzyme | A molecule made of protein that speeds up a chemical reaction by lowering the activation energy |
Lock and key model | A term used to show that enzymes are specific for a particular substrate |
Denatured | When a protein or enzyme is destroyed by heat or high ph and doesn't function anymore because the shape of the activation site has changed |
Activation site | The place of the enzyme where the substrate binds to the enzyme it is specific for each substrate |
Catalyst | Anything that speeds up a chemical reaction |
Biology | The study of life |
Amino acids | Monomers of proteins, made up of C,H,O, and N |
Organic | Containing carbon |
Monosaccharides | monomers of carbohydrates made up of C, H, O |
Nucleotide | monomers of Nucleic acids ex DNA made up of a phosphate a nitrogen base and a 5 carbon sugar |
Carbohydrates | Organic molecule used to give us immediate energy also make up cell walls of plants made up of C, H, O |
Lipids | Used in the body as a long term storage molecule of energy and for insulation. Also present in cell membranes, made up of C, H, O |
Nucleic acids | Molecules in our body that store genetic information such as DNA and RNA made up of phosphate, 5 carbon sugar, nitrogen base, contain C H O N P |
Peptide bonds | bonds that hold amino acids together to make proteins |
polymer | very large molecule such as starch and proteins |
homeostatsis | an organisms ability to adjust to small changes in the environment and stay alive. ex sweating when it gets hot. |
