AORTA | the main artery in the body |
ATRIA | the upper chambers of the heart, also known as the receiving chambers |
VENTRICLES | the pumping chambers of the heart, located inferior to the atria |
CORONARY CIRCULATION | the flow of blood through the muscular tissue of the heart |
PULMONARY CIRCULATION | the flow of oxygen-depleted blood from the right ventricle of the heart to the lungs for reoxygenation and then on the left atrium of the heart |
SYSTEMIC CIRCULATION | the flow of oxygen enriched blood from the left venricle of the heart to all parts of the body (except the lungs) and the return of oxygen-depleted blood to the heart through the right atrium |
ARTERIES | blood vessels that carry oxygen-enriched blood away from the heart to the tissue |
ALVEOLI | microscopic air sacs within the lungs responsible for the exchange of oxgyen and carbon dioxide |
VEINS | blood vessels that carry oxygen-depleted blood to the heart |
LUNGS | the two organs of respiration contained within the thorax |
PNEUMOTHORAX | the pressence of air in the thoracic cavity resulting from the perforation of the chest wall or the visceral pleura |
HEMOTHORAX | blood within the pleural cavity |
HYPERVENTILATION | prolonged, deep, and rapid breathing, resulting in decreased levels of CO2 in the blood |
FLAIL CHEST | a condition in which two or more fractures on a given rib cause the chest wall to become unstable, resulting in respiratory movements of the chest opposite to those desired |
