Term | Definition |
Natural Phenomena | Observable facts or events in the world around us. |
Hypothesis | An educated guess at the solution to your problem. |
Five Senses | Sight, touch, smell, sound, and taste. |
Observations | The act of noticing or perceiving. |
Dependent (Responding) Variable | The factor that is being measured. |
Control Variable | Other factors in experiment; they are constant. |
Experimental Group | The group being tested. |
Control Group | The group that the experimental group will be tested against. |
Qualitative Data | Observations made with senses. |
Research | Investigation. |
Journal | A specialized publication. |
Peer Review | An article that is scrutinized (reviewed) by anonymous scientists in a similar field (peers). |
Inductive Reasoning | Allows drawing of observations of specific events or hypothesizing particular events. |
Quantitative Data | Measurements- expressed as number, or quantified. |
Diagram | An image that shows the relationships between things. |
Table | Results of data in which both qualitative and quantitative data can be organized into. |
Graph | A diagram representing data. |
Chart | A graph of a dependent variable. |
Deductive Reasoning | Requiring the use of a general truth to hypothesize particular events. |
Scientific Experiment | An experiment designed to give measurable results, which support or do not support the hypothesis. |
Reproducible | A copy, or duplicate, of a scientific experiment. |
Variable | The factors that affect an experiment, so that meaningful data can be collected. |
Independent (Manipulated) Variable | Factors that are changed during an experiment. |
Conclusion | Judgement based on observations and experimentation. |
Inference | An idea involving the use of the conclusion as starting point in inductive reasoning. |
Model | Description for a system, theory, or phenomenon based on characteristics and/or properties. |
Prediction | Forecast of possible results of events. |
