phantom pain | sensation that follows the amputation of a limb or breast, nerve path is still there |
intractable pain | persists even though treated with analgesics |
radiating pain | pain that spreads outward, starts in one place spreads to larger area |
visceral pain | originates in body internal orgins, poorly localized, difuse, hard to locate |
cutaneous pain | involves skin or subcutaneous tissue |
neuropathic | results from an injury or abnormality of peripheral nervous system or CNS, cause unknown |
referred | pain originates in one part of the body but felt in an area distant from origin |
somatic | originates in tendons, ligaments, bone |
vascular | occurs with dilitation or constriction of blood vessels |
predictable | situation or treatment too take place that is known to cause pain |
pyschogenic | physical cause for pain can not be determined, pain is real |
characteristics of acute pain | rapid on set, protective in nature, emotional response - anxiety and fear |
characteristics of chronic pain | not protective in nature, misunderstood, pain persists longer than 6 months, emotional component- depression and hopelessness |
transduction | activation of pain receptors, conversion of pain stimuli into electrical impulse |
transmission | nerve pathways carry impulse of painful stimuli to brain |
perception | persons interpretation of pain |
modulation | natural process by which pain is inhibited or modified |
gate controll theory | another peripheral nerve stimulation (hot, cold, touch, vibration) travels along nerve fibers faster than pain stimuli, pain stimuli can't get through |
relaxation | reduced intensity, relief from tension or strain, put at ease. must acheive prior to having ability to sleep |
rest | person feels mentally refreshed, decreased activity, physically calm |
sleep | a cyclical physiological process, state of rest with altered consciousness |
circadian rhythm | bio-rhythm of sleep, sleep-wake cylce |
NREM sleep | deep, restful sleep, physical resoration |
REM sleep | Vivid, busy dreaming, replenishes psychological functioning |
factors affecting sleep | lifestyle, dietary habits, illness, environment, stress level |
