Purpose of Traction | purpose of any trx is one or more:1. Prevent or Reduce MM Spasm2. Immobilize a joint or part of body3. Reduce a fracture or dislocation4. Treat joint pathologies
🗑
Traction Set Up Must: | 1. Align the distal frag. to proximal fragment2. Remain Constant3. Allow for adequate exercise diversion4. Allow for optimum nursing care
🗑
Difference Between Traction and Suspension?Set Up can be one or both: | Traction: application of pulling force to a part of the body Balanced Suspension: system of weights and pullys that permits limb to "float" allows alignment to be maintained while allowing pt. as much movement as possible
🗑
Countertraction | the resistance of the body to move in the direction of the forces exerted by a traction device, (built into each setup by utilizing pt's body weight) ALWAYS a considertation
🗑
3 Basic Types of Traction | 1. Manual Traction2. Skin Traction3. Skeletal Traction
🗑
Manual Traction | Hands used to exert pulling force on bone which is to be realigned(Reserved for very stable fractures or disolcations prior to splinting or immobiliazation.(May be used prior to other skin or skeletal tractions or surgical reduction)
🗑
Skin Traction | Employs tape, mole skin etc applied directly to skinTraction boots for leg traction and pelvic belts for spine part of this categoryIndicated for: Kids fx or adult minor ones - mod amt pull for short time
🗑
Skin Traction Contraindications | Not recommended for continuous traction for weeks NOt for Frx requiring more than 5-7 lnd of longitudinal forceNot recommended when controlling limb rotation is important
🗑
Skeletal Traction | Applies tractive force directly to bone using pins, wires, screws and tongs or halosAllows use of up to 20-30 lbsExerts longitudinal pull & controls rotationAdv: unstable fragmented fractues & overcoming muscle force
