| Define morsicatio: | Habitual repetitive chewing of the lips (morsicatio laiorum), tongue (m. linguae), or buccal mucosa (m. buccarum)

| What are the demographics of morsicatio? | The lesion is more common in patients that are 35 years or older. Prevalence ranges from < 1% - > 5% of the general population. Leukoplakia is considered the most common premalignant lesion that occurs in the mouth.

| What are the histologic features of morsicatio? | In all types of morsicatio the epithelium will be acanthotic (epidermal hyperplasia) and demonstrate hyperparakeratosis which is shredded on the surface. A layer of bacterial colonies can be seen in the excessive parakeratin.

| How would you treat morsicatio? | Eliminate cause, schedule periodic follow up appointment with regular photo documentation. The lesion should be biopsied if it remains after the cause is removed.

| What is the clinical appearance of morsicatio? | Clinically the lesion would appear as rough, shredded surface with a white color. If the trauma is recent and/or more severe the lesion may appear erosive or ulcerated. It can be diffuse, unilateral or bilateral.

| What are the differential diagnoses of morsicatio? | Squamous cell carcinoma, dysplasia, lichen planus, frictional keratosis
