Sunspots   cooler portions of the sun, look like black spots.

Prominences   Superheated jets of gas and plasma will sometimes shoot out into space.

Core   the center of the Sun. Also causes nuclear fusion.

Radiative layer   Part of the sun where energy is transferred through radiation.

Convective layer   Part of the sun where energy is transferred through the transfer of hotter plasma rising and cooler plasma falling.

Photosphere   The surface of the sun is 5,000 to 8,000 degrees kelvin and is the portion of the Sun that emits light.

Chromosphere   Thin layer of gases above the photosphere. This is the Sun’s atmosphere. The chromosphere adds a red tint to the Sun (only visible during solar eclipses).

Corona   The outermost portion of the Sun, the part visible during eclipses. This is the Sun’s outer atmosphere

Convection:   Transfer of heat through movement of fluids. (liquid, gas or plasma) Hot goes up, cold goes down

Nuclear Fusion   Hydrogen atoms are smashed together to form Helium atoms.

Radiation   The transfer of energy through electromagnetic waves.
