Activity Zones   Operating zone,static zone, and transfer zones are determined by visualizing the paitents head as the cent of a clock.

Air Compressor   Provides compressed air for the handpieces and air for the air-water syringes.

Air-water Syringe   Provides air,water,or a combination spray of air and water.  
🗑
Amalgamator   Small machine that mixes(triburates) dental analgam and some dental cenements.It is placed near the assistant, either on the counter or in a drawer.

Assistant's Cart   Usually set up with air-water syringe,saliva ejector, and HVE.  
🗑
Central Vacuum System   Provides suction for saliva ejectors and oral evacuators.

Classifications of Motion   There are five classifications of motion to describe the dental team's range of motion.

Curing Light   Used to "cure" or "set" light-cured materials.  
🗑
Darkroom   Small room near treatment rooms with supplies for processing and mounting radiographs.

Dental Unit   Consists of band pieces, an air-water syringe, a saliva ejector, an oral evactuator(HVE),an ultrasonic scaling unit, and numerous other options.

Ergonomics   The study and analysis of human work and the anatomic and psychological aspects of people and their work enviroments.

Four-Handed dentistry   When the dentist and assistant are working at the dental chair together.

Handpiece   Usually two low and high speed. Attached to hoses that are part of the dental unit.  
🗑
Hands-Free Communication System   Systems allow the office staff to directly contact and communicate with another using headsets that are linked over a wireless local area network.

High Volume Evacuation (HVE)   Also called the oral excavator.Used by assistants to remove fluids from the paitents mouth.  
🗑
Intraoral Camera   Intraoral wand contains a small camera that transmits to the computer monitor.  
🗑
Laboratory   Seperate area that is well vented. The amount of lab work done depends on the dentist's preferences. May be used for dentures and for pouring impressions trimming models, polishing removable appliances, and making custom trays.

Lumbar   Lower region of the back.  
🗑
Mobile Cart   Used to hold delivery systems including the air-water syring, oral excavators,handpieces, and saliva ejector.

Napkin   Napkin or bib should be placed on the paitent and secured with a napkin chain.  
🗑
Operating Light   Attached to the dental chair or the ceiling. Both the operator and the assistant should be able to adjust the position of the light.  
🗑
Operating Zone   The area where the operator is positioned to access the oral cavity and have the best visability.  
🗑
Operatory   Also called operatories. Rooms need to be large enough to contain necessary equipment while also allowing for easy access to it .Should be designed for maximum efficency.

Rear Delivery System   Designed with the equipment behind the paitents head.  
🗑
Reception Room   The area the paitent inatially enters therefore gives the first impression of the office.

Rheostat   Speed of the handpiece controlled by a flat pedal(rheostat). Round disk on the floor, removed after each paitents treatment and are sterilized

Saliva Ejector   Used to move saliva and fluids from the paitent's mouth slowly.  
🗑
Side Delivery System   Designed with the equipment on the dentist's side. Unit is mounted to a moveable arm or mobile cart.

Six-Handed Dentistry   Additional assistant is needed to bring items to the treatment room, assist the assistant in mixing materials, or help with a paitent.

Static Zone   Static zone extends from 12 to 2 o'clock for a right handed operator and from 10 to 12 o'clock for a left handed operator. Rear delivery systems are found in a static zone, along with dental instruments and equipment used at the chair.

Sterilizing Area   Should be near the treatment rooms and should be neat and clean at all times

Subsupine Position   Reclined position with the head lower than the feet.  
🗑
Supine Position   Reclined position with the nose and the knees on the same plane.  
🗑
Transfer Zone   Area below the paitent's nose where instruments and materials are passed and recieved

Treatment Room   Designed for operative dentistry or hygine and equpped accordingly. They can be individual rooms or open spaces divided by walls and/ or equipment.

Ultrasonic Scaler   Attached to the dental unit.Used during prophylaxis and periodontal procedures.  
🗑
Water Reservior   Maintained daily. Distilled water is often used to prevent tap water deposits from building up in water lines.
