Permeable   The size of the pores and the connections between them determine how easily water moves through.

Impermeable   Something (ex. granite) that water can not pass through easily.

Unsaturated Zone   The layer of the rocks and soil above the water table in which the pores contain air, as well as, water.

Saturated Zone   The area of the permeable rock or soil in which the cracks and pores are totally filled with water.

Water Table   The top of the saturated zone.

Aquifers   Any underground layer of permeable rock or sediment that holds water and allows it to flow.

Artesian Well   A well in which water rises because of pressure with in the aquifer.

Wetlands   A land area that is covered with a shallow layer of water during some or all of the year.
