Habitat | is the place where an organism live and obtains all the things it needs to survive. |
Groundwater | water that fills the cracks and spaces in underground soil and rock layers. |
Water Cycle | the continuous process by which water moves from Earth's surface to the atmosphere and back, driven by energy from the sun and gravity. |
Evaporation | is the process by which molecules at the surface of liquid absorb enough energy to change to a gaseous state. |
Transpiration | Is when the water is given off through the leaves as water vapor. |
Precipitation | Water that falls to the Earth as rain, snow, sleet, or hail. |
Permeable | The size of the pores and the connections between them determine how easily water moves through. |
Impermeable | Something (ex. granite) that water can not pass through easily. |
Unsaturated Zone | The layer of the rocks and soil above the water table in which the pores contain air, as well as, water. |
Saturated Zone | The area of the permeable rock or soil in which the cracks and pores are totally filled with water. |
Water Table | The top of the saturated zone. |
Aquifers | Any underground layer of permeable rock or sediment that holds water and allows it to flow. |
Artesian Well | A well in which water rises because of pressure with in the aquifer. |
Wetlands | A land area that is covered with a shallow layer of water during some or all of the year. |
