Simple Sentence   contains one independent clause and no subordinate clauses.

Compound Sentence   contains two or more independent clauses and no subordinate clauses. Joined by a comma and a coordinating conjunction

Complex Sentence   contains one independent clause and at least one subordinate clause.

Sentence   a group of words that express a complete thought.

Clause   a group of words that contains both a subject and a predicate.

Independent Clause   a group of words that can stand by itself as a sentence.

Dependent Clause   a group of words that cannot stand by itself as a sentence.

Subordinating Conjunctions   these words introduce subordinate clauses. A word such as before, when, or because.

Pharse   a group of words that does not contain a subject or predicate.

Coordinating Conjunctions   connects words or groups of words of equal importance.

Compound/Complex Sentence   a sentence having 2 or more independent clauses and one or more dependent clauses.
