Term
Definition
Autotrophic   Organisms that can make their own food using the sun's energy or chemicals in the environment, to survive. Also called 'producer'
🗑
Heterotrophic   Organisms that can not make their own food and so have to eat other organisms to survive. Also called- 'consumers'
🗑
Bacteria   One celled organisms that have no nucleus-(prokaryotic)-
🗑
binary fission   one cell divides into two identical cells- also called asexual reproduction
🗑
conjugation   a form of sexual reproduction where one bacterial cell transfers some genetic material into another bacterial cell. This produces a new unique organism.
🗑
decomposer   break down dead plants and animals, returning minerals back to the soil.
🗑
producers   Organisms that can make their own food using the sun' energy or chemicals in the environment, to survive.- Also called 'autotrophic'
🗑
consumer   Organisms that can not make their own food and so have to eat other organisms to survive. Also called 'heterotrophic'
🗑
saprophyte   Organism that gets energy from decomposing dead organisms.
🗑
bacilli   rod shaped bacteria
🗑
cocci   round or spherical shaped bacteria
🗑
spirilla   spiral shaped bacteria
🗑
helpfull bacteria   nitrogen fixing bacteria, make food products like cheese, yogurt, sour cream or buttermilk, help digest food in our bodies, digest oil spills, digest sewage, use for genetic engineering, make vitamins, make oxygen for our environment
🗑
harmful bacteria   cause disease such as anthrax, cholera, tuberculosis, bubonic plague, diphtheria, tetanus, whooping cough, pneumonia, strep throat, dysentery, botulism
🗑
respiration   process of breaking down food to release energy used by the organism to survive.
🗑
endospore   a protective coat that forms around the bacteria's genetic material when the environment conditions are not good for survival. This endospore can survive for many years through terrible conditions.
🗑
parasite   when an organism lives on or in another organism and harms it.
🗑
symbiotic   relationship where two organisms live on or in another organism and it benefits both.
🗑
Alexander Fleming   Discovered penicillium- an antibiotic- which can kill bacteria. Penicillium is made from a fungi (mold).
🗑
host   an organism that provides a home or a source of energy for another organism to live.
🗑
bacteriophage   a virus that infects a bacteria.
🗑
vaccine   a substance introduced into the body to stimulate the production of your immune system cells. This will prevent the disease if you are then infected by the bacteria or virus.
🗑
antibiotic   kills bacteria or stops it from reproducing.

Review the information in the table. When you are ready to quiz yourself you can hide individual columns or the entire table. Then you can click on the empty cells to reveal the answer. Try to recall what will be displayed before clicking the empty cell.

To hide a column, click on the column name.

To hide the entire table, click on the "Hide All" button.

You may also shuffle the rows of the table by clicking on the "Shuffle" button.

Or sort by any of the columns using the down arrow next to any column heading.
If you know all the data on any row, you can temporarily remove it by tapping the trash can to the right of the row.
