Respiratory System

Quiz yourself by thinking what should be in each of the black spaces below before clicking on it to display the answer.
        Help!

Question
Answer
breathing   air moving in and out of the lungs
🗑
cellular respiration   A reaction that occurs in ALL CELLS to turn glucose into usable energy (ATP). Oxygen and glucose are the reactants. The products are water, carbon dioxide and ENERGY. C6H12O6 + O2 → H2O + CO2 + ENERGY (ATP)
🗑
inhale   taking air into the lungs, breathing in
🗑
exhale   pushing air out of the lungs, breathing out
🗑
epiglottis   a flap at the top of the trachea that prevents food from going down the trachea
🗑
trachea   also called the windpipe, this is the tube made of cartilage that carries air to your lungs
🗑
bronchi   the two tubes that split off of the trachea and go to each lung
🗑
lungs   the two large organs in the chest where gas exchange occurs. used for breathing. They have a spongy structure.
🗑
alveoli   very tiny air sacs inside the lungs where gas exchange occurs
🗑
diaphragm   the flat muscle beneath your lungs that contracts and relaxes to help move air in and out of your lungs
🗑
cellular waste   substances that your cells no longer need, that may build up to toxic levels if they are not removed (includes carbon diooxide, water, salts, and many other substances)
🗑
oxygen   a respiratory gas needed by cells to make energy
🗑
carbon dioxide   a waste gas from cells that needs to be removed from the body
🗑
BTB   an indicator chemical called bromothymol blue that turns yellow in the presence of CO2 in water (because CO2 in water makes a weak acid). It turns back to blue if the CO2 is removed from the water by photosynthesis of water plants.
🗑
carbonic acid   the acid produced when CO2 is bubbled through water
🗑
photosynthesis   A reaction that occurs in plant cells (in the chloroplasts) that produces glucose & oxygen from water, ( CO2 & sunlight H2O + CO2 + sunlight → C6H12O6 + O2 )
🗑

Review the information in the table. When you are ready to quiz yourself you can hide individual columns or the entire table. Then you can click on the empty cells to reveal the answer. Try to recall what will be displayed before clicking the empty cell.

To hide a column, click on the column name.

To hide the entire table, click on the "Hide All" button.

You may also shuffle the rows of the table by clicking on the "Shuffle" button.

Or sort by any of the columns using the down arrow next to any column heading.
If you know all the data on any row, you can temporarily remove it by tapping the trash can to the right of the row.
